RFID tags are generally divided into three categories based on how they are powered:
1. Passive RFID tags
The tags are compact and battery-free, powered by the electromagnetic field emitted by the reader, and the read range is generally 3-10 meters.
2. Semi-passive RFID tags
The built-in battery powers the internal circuits (such as sensors), but still relies on the reader to transmit signals, with a read range of up to 5-15 meters, depending on the frequency and antenna design.
3. Active RFID tags
Equipped with a built-in battery, they can actively send radio frequency signals. The read range can be as close as 15 meters or more.
Which RFID tag is best for long-distance use?
If your use case requires the longest read range, then active RFID tags are undoubtedly the best choice, which are designed to send strong signals over long distances and can even penetrate certain obstacles.
If you want to strike a balance between cost and performance, semi-passive RFID tags are a good choice. They cover a wider range than passive tags and also have sensing functions such as temperature or motion detection, which are ideal for smart logistics and cold chain monitoring.
RFID tags designed for long-range applications are usually active or semi-passive, and while passive tags are ideal for cost-effective short-range tracking, active RFID solutions will play a greater role for applications that need to cover larger areas, such as vehicle access control, large-scale asset tracking, or real-time location systems (RTLS).
