Shanghai Hongkou District Launches RFID Unmanned Retail Pharmacy

Apr 23, 2025

With the continuous development of Internet of Things technology, the first unmanned retail pharmacy equipped with RFID technology in Shanghai Hongkou District: Leibei Pharmaceutical Yongxin Store was officially put into operation recently. This innovative model not only realizes the automation and intelligence of drug sales, but also sets a new digital benchmark for the pharmaceutical retail industry.
It is reported that the unmanned pharmacy realizes the automatic tracking of the entire process of goods from warehousing, shelving, sales to inventory by attaching RFID electronic tags on the outer packaging of each drug. The system can monitor the inventory and location of drugs in real time. Once the drugs are taken out, the background will immediately complete automatic identification and deduction, which greatly improves the operational efficiency and inventory accuracy.
In addition, the unique identification code of the RFID tag is bound to the cloud platform database. When users purchase drugs by themselves, they can also verify the medication information by scanning the code or swiping the ID card to ensure safety and compliance. Some high-risk or prescription drugs also support remote video consultation and audit unlocking, effectively avoiding the risk of abuse and mispurchase.
Industry insiders said that compared with the traditional drugstores that rely on manual inventory and cashier processes, unmanned retail drugstores can achieve 24-hour operation, fast settlement and accurate traceability with the help of RFID, which not only meets the needs of the "fast-paced" life in the city, but also brings unprecedented transparency and security to drug management.
At present, the project is planning to be piloted in multiple communities and business districts in Shanghai to create a more complete intelligent solution for urban health retail.
