RFID Security Tags: What Are RFID Security Tags And How Do They Work?

Jun 20, 2025

RFID security tag is a tag used for anti-theft purposes that uses radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to track, monitor, and protect products or assets from unauthorized access, movement, or theft. Tags come in many forms, such as cable seal tags, paper tags with a sensor layer, and more. They can operate in various frequency bands (HF, UHF, NFC) and support different communication protocols depending on the application.

RFID security tags consist of a microchip and antenna embedded in a tag or seal. The chip stores a unique identifier as well as other data, such as a product ID, shipping information, or expiration date. When the tag comes into range of an RFID reader, the tag responds by wirelessly transmitting this information. This process is fast, reliable, and can read multiple items simultaneously, even through packaging or containers.
RFID security tags differ from standard RFID tags in that they have added anti-tampering features. For example, if the tag is cut, improperly removed, or opened, an alarm is triggered. Some tags also include encryption features that can limit unauthorized access to sensitive data, adding a layer of cybersecurity.

These tags are widely used in a variety of industries:

In retail, RFID security tags help reduce store theft and internal shrinkage by protecting items such as jewelry and electronics. When integrated with store security gates, the tags automatically trigger an alarm if someone attempts to take unverified merchandise.

In logistics and supply chain, RFID wire seals can be applied to containers, pallets, or shipments. If the seal is broken or tampered with, the system can flag the event and record it in real time, thereby improving shipment visibility and ensuring cargo integrity.

In pharmaceuticals and healthcare, RFID security tags help track items such as medicine bottles and surgical instruments to prevent misplacement, counterfeiting, or unauthorized use.
