What Frequency Does RFID Use

Over the development of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, several common frequency bands have emerged, tailored to different application scenarios and requirements. RFID systems in different frequency bands vary in read range, data transmission speed, and environmental adaptability.

1. Low Frequency (LF)
LF RFID generally operates in the tens to hundreds of kilohertz range. Its characteristics include a shorter read range, typically a few centimeters, but strong anti-interference capabilities and good stability around metal and water. It is commonly used in animal identification, access control systems, and applications requiring operation in specialized environments (such as metal and water).

2. High Frequency (HF)
HF RFID typically operates at a frequency of 13.56 MHz. Its read range is typically between a few centimeters and ten centimeters, with faster transmission rates than LF and relatively lower tag costs. HF technology is widely used in bus cards, access control cards, electronic ticketing, and library management.
3. Ultra-High Frequency (UHF)
UHF RFID typically operates in the 860-960 MHz range, with specific frequency bands varying depending on national and regional regulations. UHF RFID offers a longer read range, ranging from a few meters to tens of meters, and boasts fast read speeds, making it suitable for scenarios requiring rapid, high-volume identification, such as warehousing and logistics, retail supply chain management, and vehicle identification.

4. Microwave Band
In addition to the common frequency bands mentioned above, some RFID systems operate at microwave frequencies, such as 2.45 GHz or higher. These systems offer faster data transmission rates and are suitable for applications requiring real-time communication or high bandwidth, but they also have higher requirements for environmental interference and tag costs.
Different frequency bands of RFID technology are suitable for different application scenarios: low frequencies emphasize stability, high frequencies balance cost and applicability, UHF frequencies emphasize long-range and high-speed identification, and microwave bands meet specialized requirements for high bandwidth. When selecting an RFID system, enterprises should determine which frequency band to use based on their specific business needs and environmental conditions.
