How RFID Seal Works

In today's digital supply chains, RFID seals are becoming the standard for securing and tracking containers, trucks, and valuable assets. But what exactly is an RFID seal, and how does it work? Understanding the structure and operation of this technology helps logistics managers, exporters, and customs officials use it more effectively.

1️⃣ What Is an RFID Seal?

An RFID seal-also known as an electronic seal or RFID security seal-is a tamper-evident locking device that integrates a radio frequency identification (RFID) chip inside a plastic or metal body.

It combines physical protection (like a traditional bolt or cable seal) with digital identification that can be read wirelessly.

Each seal carries a unique ID code stored in the microchip. When scanned by an RFID reader or NFC-enabled smartphone, it transmits the encoded information without physical contact, allowing quick verification of authenticity and status.

2️⃣ How RFID Seal Works

Step 1 – Sealing

The seal is locked onto a container door, truck latch, or equipment panel. At that moment, the system records key data:

Seal ID

Container or asset number

Date and location of sealing

Operator or driver ID

This information can be uploaded automatically to a logistics or ERP platform.

Step 2 – Data Storage and Transmission

The embedded RFID chip contains a memory cell that stores a unique electronic code (EPC).

When a reader emits radio waves, the seal's antenna captures the signal and sends back its ID plus status data-within a few milliseconds.

Depending on the type of RFID technology:

HF/NFC (13.56 MHz): short-range scanning up to 10 cm, ideal for manual checks.

UHF (860-960 MHz): long-range scanning up to 10 m, suitable for automatic gate or yard systems.

Step 3 – Tamper Detection

Advanced RFID seals include an internal conductive loop or sensor wire.

If the seal is cut or forced open, the loop breaks-changing the chip's internal state to "tampered."

When the seal is scanned later, the reader immediately shows a tamper alert and timestamp, creating a clear digital record for audits.

Step 4 – Verification and Data Integration

During transportation or inspection, authorized personnel can scan the seal using:

Handheld RFID readers

Fixed portal readers at entry gates

NFC smartphones

The collected data is automatically synchronized with WMS, ERP, or IoT dashboards, providing real-time visibility of seal integrity across the entire journey.
